In Honor of National BBQ Month

I didn’t even know National BBQ Month was a thing, but since I’ve found out that it is, I thought I’d share a recipe I tried a few weeks ago. It’s not necessarily a barbecue recipe, but it’s a side that you can serve with barbecue, so close enough.

I found this recipe and made some changes, and it is delicious. I highly recommend these, and they’re a perfect pairing when you’re cooking on the grill. I don’t have a fancy name for them, so let’s just call them Really Good Baked Beans.

  • 3 large cans of pork and beans (just any regular brand from the store)
  • 1 large sweet onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 8 slices uncooked bacon

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.  Spray a 9×13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
Saute onions over medium-high heat in butter until tender and translucent.
Mix beans, sauteed onions, ketchup, honey, and brown sugar until blended well. Pour in greased baking dish. Top with uncooked bacon in a single layer (I covered the entire top). Bake uncovered for 3 hours. You’ll know the baked beans are ready when the top is dark and caramelized.
Let me know if you try this recipe! Super delicious!
